About How The Young Ones Changed Comedy

Throughout its 12 episodes at the start of the 1980s, The Young Ones provided a vehicle for some of the most innovative writers of the new wave of alternative comedy in the early 1980s, and made household names of an ensemble cast that would go on to dominate the British comedy landscape for years to come.

About How The Young Ones Changed Comedy

Created and written by Ben Elton, Rik Mayall and Lise Mayer (with additional material from Alexi Sayle), The Young Ones pushed the boundaries of taste and ripped up the blueprint of what a sitcom was supposed to be. With cast members including Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan, as well as guest stars like Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders (and not forgetting musical guests including Madness, Dexy Midnight Runners, Motorhead and The Damned), The Young Ones was one of a kind.

How The Young Ones Changed Comedy combines archive footage with revelations from many of the stars who were involved both in front of and behind the camera - such as Nigel Planer, Alexei Sayle, John Lloyd, Paul Jackson and Lise Mayer - while comedians that followed in its wake such as David Baddiel, Charlie Higson, Clive Anderson and Richard Herring discuss how it influenced them and galvanised the British comedy scene.
