Blackadder co-stars pay tribute to Nursie actress

Patsy Byrne

Patsy Byrne, who was best known for playing Nursie in Blackadder II, has died at the age of 80.

Her Blackadder co-stars Stephen Fry and Tony Robinson were among those who paid tribute to the actress.

Fry, who played Lord Melchett in the series, tweeted: ?Oh lord no! I?ve just heard that Patsy Byrne, darling Nursie has died. Hope St Bernard has welcomed her to eternal rest. Adorable woman.?

Meanwhile, Baldrick actor Tony Robinson told Radio 5 Live listeners: ?It was like we were her boys she was so indulgent towards us.

?Patsy was just a real confident centre of all the scenes she was in. While the rest of us might be getting twitchy and slightly irritated, Patsy never was. She was superb.?

The actress started her career with the Royal Shakespeare Company after graduating from drama school.

In a career that spanned over 50 years she went on to star in TV series including Z Cars, Watching, I, Claudius and The Old Curiosity Shop. Her most recent appearance was in Holby City in 2006.

Patsy is the second actor from Blackadder II to pass away in recent weeks following the death of Rik Mayall on 9 June.
